Today polyglot.city is one year old, yay!

So, a few words about the state and future plans of our instance from your admin.

As was already a year ago, polyglot.city is currently administered, moderated and paid solely by myself. This has been a sustainable model so far, and if we keep going like this, it will stay sustainable. I've renewed the domain for another year and I'll keep paying the monthly hosting fee, and everything will stay as it is now.

We'll continue to exist as a quiet niche instance at least for the second year, but who knows what will happen a year from now. Anyway, thanks for being here and taking part in our discussions. :)

@Stoori I know I don't use it as much as I should, but I appreciate this instance's existence. I'd love to see more linguistics and language discussion, but it feels like that's the most niche of all of my interests. It also doesn't help that I can't contribute much to that discussion haha

@Alamantus Yeah, it would be nice if here was some thematic discussions going on. But I'm not the best person to get it going, either.

I've noticed that I'm more likely to participate in discussions that someone else has started, but it's not so easy for me to be the one to start a discussion.

It also looks like chat is a more natural platform for me to discuss things than this kind of social media platform.

So that's one of the things that probably won't change here any time soon. :)

@Stoori Happy first birthday and thanks for setting up, administering and above all for so graciously sponsoring the instance! I too am an infrequent poster – largely due to real-life commitments – but try and read regularly.

One question: masto.host has a new pricing structure based on usage rather than users (old: masto.host/old-pricing/, new: masto.host/pricing/). Would polyglot.city be classed as “Light”? If so, I don't mind donating to make up the 2€/month difference for a year.

@jools Thanks for your support!

It's very likely that polyglot.city could be classed as Light. And I appreciate your donation offer.

However, it's not that simple. I live in Finland, where it's illegal for me to receive donations without official permission. Many people do that off the radar, but if I state it anywhere publicly (like, here), some adversary could snitch me.

So putting up a working infrastructure to circumvent that problem is too much effort for me now, esp. just for 2€/mo.

@Stoori @jools instead of a donation, maybe you could pay the additional fee directly to the provider, somehow.

@rgggn @jools That would probably be too much hassle for such a small thing. :)

@Stoori appreciate the thread (and obviously the instance itself). Thanks!

@Stoori Thank you for hosting this community. I am very glad that I have been a member for a year.👍 👍 👍

@Stoori Thanks for keeping this instance!

I'm not a very active user and I've never really learnt how to use Mastodon properly (what do people write about? I eventually run out of ideas), but I like this instance
