who on my instance is following *that* account? and *that* one?!

@Stoori Is that how the federated timeline is populated? 😮

@alva I've assumed it works that way. Or else I've understood things wrong, wouldn't be the first time really. :D

There's also the option for an instance to follow federation relays, which populates the federated timeline with whole other instances and not just with individual accounts, but in this case I'm the admin and know that federation relay is not in use, so someone must follow all those accounts I see there.

@Stoori I thought it was posts from all instances that mine federates with, but I've no idea. If locals are following all those accounts, that raises questions for me as well!

@alva At least it's certainly not all public toots from all accounts on a remote instance. Like, there are a few accounts from mastodon.social that show up on federated timeline, but definitely not all of them, so in any case the majority of public toots doesn't show up there.

@Stoori The docs just say "There are various ways your server may discover posts, but the bulk of them will be from people that other users on your server follow." 🤨

Do you ever browse the federated timeline and just think

@Stoori But that sounds like your understanding was close to correct and mine was very incorrect!

@alva let's just assume the most eyebrow-raising accounts on federated tl are outside of that bulk, to keep the peace of mind...

@Stoori @alva as an admin of a 5 people instance I can confirm that it is true.

@Stoori @alva if you want to know who follows certain instances you could do some sql requests to find out.

Do you ever browse the federated timeline and just think

@lilimi nah, it's not my business, especially if the accounts are not against instance rules but only a bit weird for my taste @alva

@Stoori Yes I do, quite often actually!
