saddened but not surprised to learn all those trolly memes were secretly funded by car manufacturers who want to create negative associations with public transit.

Silly metal bands

Saw a band named Dishönor, which I guess is just another instance of sprinkling umlauts on an English word.
But dishönor as a Swedish compund word means "mist hens." :blobcatgiggle:

Someone was complaining that some software made by Germans had an incomplete English localisation, so some German would leak through. Now you know what your software is like for the rest of the world, if it's localised at all. :blobcatgiggle:

Saw a sign that says "turning traffic must yield to pedestrians", which really drives home that this whole "traffic" experiment is a failure

If we need signs that say "don't murder people with your car", we shouldn't have cars

Writer pro tip:

If you're writing a chase (either by foot or any vehicle) in a snowy landscape, DO KNOW that there will be track in the snow and you can just follow it. The chaser won't lose the chasee so easily in snow.

Unbelievable how often you can find this blunder in actual published books...

Protip:

The "Nordic Model" of socialism still relies on the exploitation of countries in the imperial periphery.

Without global de-colonization, with truth and reconciliation, there can be no justice.

I think it would really cool to design a program for people to learn how to differentiate and pronounce different tones, for Mandarin or for any other tonal languages.

#DarkMode
"Is Dark Mode Such A Good Idea?" interesting article quoting resources debunking the "dark mode is better for the eyes and battery". On a personal level I hate dark mode except for multimedia consumption in the Dark (Netflix)

"Social Urbanism" approach to urban planning helped take Medellin from Pablo Escobar's most dangerous city in the world to a "model city" tourist destination. Medellin tackled crime and violence "not through more policing but through urban planning, infrastructure, and social programs."

Today in: England is the Worst

The Church of England has ruled that an Irish-language inscription on a Coventry gravestone must have a translation with it to ensure the phrase is not mistaken as being a political statement.
irishtimes.com/news/ireland/ir

This itself is a horrifyingly political statement! It says "through centuries of political turmoil and suffering that we inflicted on you, English people removed so many uses of your language that the only ones left are, we must assume, hostile to us."

Does anyone have any resources on cultural-historical periods outside Europe? I know plenty about renaissance and baroque and stuff. Where do I go to learn the big lines of arabic culture? Sub-saharan african culture? South asian culture?
