there's been quite a bit of research on the cognitive/health benefits of multilingualism, but I think the framing tends to be backwards. multilingualism isn't a bonus, but the default (historically, anthropologically, biologically). our species developed multilingual, and still is everywhere not too damaged by colonial steamrollers. monolingualism is a v recent development, an emergent artifact of a capitalist+racist society.

so we should be talking about the cognitive damage of monolingualism.

Anyway, we went to buy the chairs after all. Ah, finally new chair for work!

I haven't dressed up this much for over a month now. I even have a new shirt on!

We had planned to go to buy new office chairs today, but now my spouse is too tired to go, so I sit dressed up here at home.

Might as well use the opportunity to take a .

covid19, study

Does Density Aggravate the COVID-19 Pandemic? Early Findings and Lessons for Planners
tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10

"In this [...] study, we find that density is not linked to rates of COVID-19 infection, after controlling for metropolitan area population, socioeconomics, and health care infrastructure in U.S. counties. Surprisingly, we find that COVID-19 death rates are lower in denser counties and higher in less dense counties, at a high level of statistical significance."

@dankwraith I don't have much to add to this topic that you haven't already heard, but after reading your screen name, I wanted to make absolutely sure that you were aware that the Royal Spanish Academy has acknowledged the verb "cacapostear".

tech suggestions needed

Heya folks!

I'm having video meetings with my non-technical friends, and last time we used meet.jit.si. It worked after 15 minutes, when everyone had taken their time to retry until all cameras and mics worked. So we'd like to have a backup plan for the next time, if we just can't get jitsi working.

So what other public non-corporate services there are?
- Other public jitsi servers?
- Other non-corporate software that doesn't require installing?

Thanks in advance!

If other species have a 'fursona' that is a human, is it still fursona, or is it, like, baldsona or something?

is there a federated, or at least libre, alternative to sites like goodreads or librarything? i.e. a site to list which books I've read and post short reviews, with social features. I saw ReadDB but it seems to be not quite it…

white privilege, nordic privilege

So, at the same time that I'm grateful for the previous generations who fought for this decent and peaceful situation here, I must not forget that this is a rare privilege in this world. My job here is not to tell you what to do, but to learn from you and live so that my decent situation is not paid by your suffering.

white privilege, nordic privilege

Thanks to this Nordic privilege a person like me — trans, autistic, from working class family and without much money — can live a decent, peaceful and pretty harmonious and fulfilling life without having to worry about those many things that people from similar backgrounds have to endure in other countries.

white privilege, nordic privilege

There's even a Finnish saying, ”being born in Finland is like winning lottery”, which people use unironically to express their gratitude to have a Finnish citizenship from birth. And this is nothing else than pure Nordic privilege (although pointing this out could bring up some angry denialism from some people).

white privilege, nordic privilege

As a Finnish person, I think the concept of white privilege is a bit inaccurate to describe my position. Sure, white privilege applies even in Finland, as non-white people are, unfortunately, widely discriminated against. But when the biggest immigrant groups are also white (and are discriminated against), it doesn't capture the whole picture. Thus it could be proper to talk about Nordic privilege in addition to white privilege.
