linguistic pol

I swear this is the last time I'm going to harp on about this, but "#latinx" doesn't fit #Spanish phonology at all. It kind of works in English. So it's a word for English, fair enough.

BUT ENGLISH ALREADY HAD A GENDER NEUTRAL FORM! It's "Latin".

So...

Went from English Latin, to Spanish latino/latina (yeah, demonyms aren't capitalised in Spanish), then back to English Latino/Latina and then to English Latinx.

Pa qué tanto brinco estando el suelo tan parejo...

**Police violence in Latin America 'out of control'**

"In Latin America, the coronavirus pandemic and police brutality are rife. People are regularly killed during protests or in police custody. Why are security forces so ruthless?"

A question (out of curiosity only) for speakers of languages with grammatical dual (eg. ):

If you do software () and the strings are divided into singular and plural forms, how do you solve the problem of the missing string for dual?

I can’t really control who answers this poll, but let’s try to boost this and get some answers because as someone who manages an online community for a living I’m curious...

Instance admins or mods, did you have prior community management experience before taking on your role on the fedi? (And please no comments here, I just want poll answers.)

admin update:

Our user count has once again reached the limit of our hosting plan, so I'm making the periodical pruning of abandoned accounts.

36 users who have not used their account for more than 6 months have been notified that their account will be suspended after 30 days if they don't react.

In addition to that I suspended 8 accounts that have never logged in once.

Soon we'll be able to open up for new registrations again.

This was a wild ride! As usual, I didn't know where the story would end up when I started reading it. But when story includes characters with job titles like lead interaction developer and enforcement artist (in security company), I know it's going to be good. I haven't laughed at startup culture this much in a long time.

“Aphra Behn, in her novel Oroonoko, published in 1688, already pondered what the increasingly intense clearing of the Caribbean forests would mean for the Indigenous peoples and animals relegated to the diminishing woods. Behn’s sojourn in Suriname in 1653 coincided with what has been called “The Great Clearing,” the period between 1650 and 1665, marked by devastating deforestation throughout the British and French Caribbean.”

Great. Some stomach problems, so stayed home and mailed the teacher that I could attend remotely if possible.

Teacher responded 1 hour before lecture start that sure, I'll put the remote connection up.

Then I waited for them to send me a link to the remote lecture. Nope, didn't get any. Lecture's almost over by now.

And yeah, I could've been sleeping instead of sitting here frustrated.

1. Formal vs. informal matters

Certain ways of speaking can make it hard for people to take you seriously, especially if you’re applying your new language to your work. Regardless of how your instructors actually speak, they’re going to teach you formal use first.
