Hi! #Intro redo as I moved to Polyglot City.
I'm Francis, 24, He/Him. I'm Indonesian, of the Indonesian-Chinese ethnic minority.
Nice to meet you all!
After a month off, I'm back to studying #Chinese!
I'm not really satisfied with my current study method, but it'll work for now (hopefully) given my schedule constraints.
My plans for the rest of the day? 今天我去看电影！
Trying Hive. I’ve heard good things. Not language community *yet* but I know for at least 3 other language learners from #langtwt/#langtoot who have created accounts.
It’s more visual like Instagram. It has Twitter-like function also, but I doubt text-only microblogging will be very visible. We’ll see.
I will start using #LangHive as the hashtag
I've been trying to assist with the migration from the bird to the ancient elephant. That was the original intention - to help uses of #langtwt find each other.
But friends on the platform informed me of another positive; the merging of our communities, and the ability to find each other across all platforms!
So... I offer to #langtoot; if you want to be on this list, direct message me with your user IDs.
This was one of my favorite things that I posted in birdland, so that it's not lost...
Let's talk about peeing in space.
Several people, in response to my NY Times essay, have said that women couldn't go into space because we lacked the technology for them to pee in space.
When the Mercury program was proposed, doctors were worried that people would not be able to urinate or even swallow without the aid of gravity.
And yet, they still made plans to send a man into space.
May be a sensitive question.
When you're part of an ethnic minority, is it normal to feel unwelcome or you don't belong, both in your home country and outside it? Especially when you've been discriminated against, looked down upon, or mistreated in and out of your home country?
I'm of an ethnic minority and I have these feelings from time to time. I want to know if these feelings are commonly shared among fellow people who are of an ethnic minority.
long post about empathy
i wish it was a teachable skill like arithmetic or something you could give like chicken pox
but it's more like appreciating art. some are naturally drawn to it, others grow up in a culture of such appreciation
it's not really something you can teach. you can guide through education, you can help through exposure, you can facilitate through communication. but it rests on the individual to choose and recognize value
because empathy is appreciation for humanity
this is probably going out into the void on a very general server, but: hello! I am a phonetician and fieldworking linguist at the University at Buffalo working on languages of Cameroon and China. I am hoping to pre-empt things by rebuilding some social networks here even though I am late to the party (and so, locked out of all the linguist servers). where are we??
me: *screaming into the abyss*
the abyss: this could have been an email
@The_Pyroneer For Japanese books translated into English (that I've read in English), the two that usually come to mind are 'The Miracles of the Namiya General Store' and 'The Aosawa Murders'
I guess I should write a brief introduction. I'm not quite sure exactly how I'm going to use Mastodon yet but I'm interested in #folklore and #mythology, especially from #Japan and East Asia, Japanese #culture and #art, especially #ukiyoe prints, and anything magical or #supernatural. I am trying to learn #Japanese, but it's a very slow process. I have a website mostly about Japanese folklore, see link in bio.
Looking forward to connecting with others here.
Ukiyo-e print by Utagawa Hiroshige.
I'm new to this whole Mastodon thing, so I guess it's time for an #introduction.
Will definitely toot about #books and my language learning journey. Maybe some other stuff too.
Either way, can't wait to get to know more people and share interests! よろしく!

Polyglot City is the right instance for you if you're interested in linguistics, languages, language learning, or translation, or if you're multilingual or polyglot. All languages are allowed to flourish on our timelines, and multilingual puns are welcome. And of course you're also free to talk about other things besides language.
