2022 is almost over, folks.
What have you done this year that you're proud of? (don't be shy ♥️)

So apparently, Iceland fought multiple mini-wars against the UK for cod fishing rights, and WON EVERY TIME.

What's the worst #writing advice you've ever gotten?

In university I once went home in tears because a prof I had, who was a published author, told us that "real" writers have just an insatiable need to write all the time, and if you didn't feel a deep, constant need to write maybe you just weren't a "real" writer.

Now that I'm an adult and I talk to other writers, every "real" writer I know is a procrastinating train wreck that prays for the sweet release of death like 90% of the time they spend writing.

So like... idk about that one, prof.

I already posted this in the past, but the top two definitions here just summarise the two kinds of language and literature teachers I had:

Curse upon all the publishers that don't include a publication year on their books. Curse!

Biblically Accurate Unhinged Language Owl (official picture)

One of the weird things languages can get creative with is the name of "@".

In Hungarian, it's a worm, in Swedish, you can call it a "cinnamon bun", because of course you can.

There are more distinct languages spoken in the red areas than the grey areas of this map.

language families in red:
Austronesian 1,246 languages
Niger-Congo 1,495
Trans-New Guinea 561
+ other Papuan ~200

daylight saving time

Daylight Saving Time is already a fuck in Europe, and now I learned what it's like in the US.

Every state decides for itself whether it wants to use it or not, then inside those states you have Indian reservations which also individually decide whether or not to use it.

And so you can have situations where you drive 200km in a straight line and change time zones three or four times.

Abolish Daylight Saving Time. Who had this horrible idea.

My mum put chocolate in our shoes because, you know, Santa Claus day, but our dog decided to eat them so instead of chocolate, we got the chance to take the dog to the vet.

Dog's fine, if you're wondering, though a little shook by the vomit-thing she got at the vet.

Honestly, something which uses your own pride to trick you into giving it your face so it can sell it later? That sounds horrifying enough that it could be something from East European folklore.

Someone has taken my FediFollows logo and combined it with the FediTips name to create a reddit group that is posting transphobic material.

This is nothing to do with me. I don't use reddit and never have done.

I'm part of the LGBTQIA+ community and totally condemn transphobia.

(Not going to link to the group obviously.)

For many years I wanted to learn to use a sewing machine. About a year ago I got a secondhand one, was taught the basics, and practised by making a pillowcase. Today, I used it to repair my own clothing for the first time.

This is what I want in life.

Last summer, I removed my work email from my phone and disabled all work-related DM notifications (except for Slack, which I don't use with anyone at my institution). It made what turned out to be a brutal semester more humane.

Over the past few months I (re)learned that there are no real emergencies (at least not ones that come through email) and that people can wait a reasonable amount of time for a response. And I realized that I don't have to apologize for taking a reasonable amount of time to respond. I became more present at work and began establishing stronger boundaries at home.

I cannot recommend this enough. I don't think I can ever go back.

I like how Duolingo usually gives some fun facts for all languages, but for Dutch, it just says "It's, uh, spoken in the Netherlands, by a bunch of people, is all."

Polyglot City

Polyglot City is the right instance for you if you're interested in linguistics, languages, language learning, or translation, or if you're multilingual or polyglot. All languages are allowed to flourish on our timelines, and multilingual puns are welcome. And of course you're also free to talk about other things besides language.
